What Is a Changing Robe?

A changing robe is a must-have for roamers, van-lifers, swell-chasers, dippers and wayfarers. It keeps you warm, protects you from the weather, and makes getting changed a breeze wherever you are. At Passenger, our changing robes are designed to be practical and comfortable, using responsible materials like recycled polyester made from plastic bottles. They're perfect for staying super cosy and for those awkward beach carpark changes - no more flashing the elderly couple parked up next door…

Why Wear a Changing Robe?

A changing robe is the ultimate in adventure comforts - they’re equal parts practical, toasty warm and ours have some pretty funky prints. If you’re still not convinced, here are some more reasons to wear one:

  • Warmth and protection. Changing robes are designed to shield you from the cold and elements, offering insulation while you change, whether post-surf or after a cold water dip.

  • Convenience. Their oversized design makes changing a breeze while being pretty discreet, allowing you to quickly get changed in public or on the beach without hassle.

  • Versatility. Perfect for all weather conditions, whether you're seeking warmth after a chilly hike, wind protection on a stormy big swell day or as a cosy layer for around camp.

  • Durability. Built to last, changing robes are made from weather-resistant materials that can withstand the rigours of most outdoor adventures, zip up and feel the warmth.

  • Easy care. Like fleeces, changing robes are easy to maintain, machine washable and quick to dry, keeping them fresh and ready for your next escapism adventure.

Things to Think About When Buying a Changing Robe

First up, what do you need a changing robe for? Are you braving early-morning surf sessions, exploring in all weather, or just looking for an easy throw-on layer for van trips? When choosing a changing robe, it's important to consider key factors like material durability and waterproof performance. Plus style and fit to dial in on one that works for you and your chosen escapism. At Passenger, we recognise that a quality changing robe is a long-term investment, and we want to help you make the best choice. Here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Where will you use it most? Post-surf, wild swims, camping, or everyday roaming?

  •  Is it waterproof?  If unsure, read our  Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant guide. If you're tackling the elements, a waterproof robe like the  Tempest Recycled Waterproof Changing Robe is a solid pick.

  • How warm do you need it to be? Sherpa-lined for extra insulation, or a lighter towel-lined option for quick drying?

  • Does it fit right? Oversized for easy changing, long enough for full coverage?

  • Does it have a hood? If so, does it offer enough protection from gusty southerlies out on the sand?

  • How durable is the outer material? Will it stand up to the elements and suit your chosen escapism?

  • Are there enough pockets? To stash cold hands and essentials while on the move.

Looking After Your Changing Robe

When washing anything with recycled polyester in it, be sure to use a Guppy Friend Washing Bag. Pop your robe inside before sticking it in the washing machine and the bag will catch microfibres and microplastics, preventing them from entering our waterways. The changing robe will last longer too. Skip the tumble dryer and let your robe air-dry to keep its shape and softness. Fresh air is best, but a ventilated space works too.

When it comes to waterproofs and rain cover, a properly washed and reproofed waterproof jacket or changing robe should last you a solid few years of adventuring, with just a few additions to the shopping list: Nikwax Tech Wash, Nikwax TX Direct Wash In Waterproofer and Nikwax TX Direct Spray on Waterproofer.

FAQs

What’s the best changing robe for cold weather?
For colder conditions, look for a changing robe with thick insulation or a warm lining, like a Sherpa fleece. For added weather protection, consider a robe with waterproof and windproof features to keep you warm and dry in harsh conditions.

How do I choose the right size?
Changing robes are typically designed to be oversized for easy changing. Refer to the size guide to ensure a good fit, taking into consideration your body measurements and preferred level of coverage.

Are Passenger changing robes waterproof?
Some changing robes are fully waterproof and windproof, while others offer water-resistant protection for lighter rain. Be sure to check the specific details of the robe you’re considering to make sure it ticks all the boxes.

How do I keep my changing robe feeling soft?
To maintain softness, wash your robe on a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, as they can affect the material. Air drying is recommended to preserve the fabric's shape and softness.

Are Passenger changing robes made responsibly?
We use materials like recycled polyester made from plastic bottles to create our changing robes. This reduces waste and supports more responsible practices, plus product longevity.

Can I pack my changing robe down for travel?
Many changing robes are designed to be lightweight and packable, making them ideal for travel. Some may be bulkier but still pack down easily enough to chuck in the back of the van.
