Here's to the days amongst still pines and escapes under misty canopies. For the ones who carry the edges of this wilderness in their minds, Roamers at heart and at home lost in the woods...
There’s a wild within that speaks of the journeys still to come and the stories yet to be told. What is it that lies after this trail, past the bay, at the top of those peaks or beyond the pines? Those that travel into the unfamiliar will find themselves there, beyond the everyday.
From time to time the lure of escapism for places close to home calls. At our base in the New Forest, the surrounding wilderness is never far from thought. Tall redwoods line the trails, fresh pines carpet the horizon and dense evergreens guide our journey.
Seemingly endless trails present themselves as we roam deeper into the canopies. The lines we choose are never set, familiar maps always offering something new. An opening offers a place to pause and soak it all up. We drop our backpacks, throw out a blanket and rustle up a welcome lunch of sorts.
Steam from a well earned hot tea fades into the conifer behind as we gather up our essentials. We turn to choose which direction to set off and a chill in the air calls us to reach for a faithful beanie. The first time this season.
The change in seasons are unmistakable here. As the last haze of summer bows behind the horizon autumn whispers through the leaves. A mist moves in from the west and a fine rain hangs at the treetops. We take shelter under a deep green douglas fir as we pull over trusty layers that will see us through.
We embrace the days like this, wandering on in search of simple things. The warmth and shelter of the van awaits us but not yet, for now we are lost in the woods…
